When you’re one of the world’s leading hotel groups spending £80 million to refurbish an entire holiday resort made up of four hotels, 19 luxury highland lodges, a leisure complex, a new 18-hole Championship golf course and conference facilities, the choice of fuel supplier is important. When you’re in an off-mains gas area in the north of Scotland, the decision can be critical.
As part of its huge refurbishment programme, the exclusive Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort nestled in the Cairngorm National Park, turned to Calor Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to power all of its heating, catering and leisure facilities.
For Calor, with its 70 years of LPG experience, the commission was one of its largest ever. Senior Engineer Kevin McKeown led the team that drove the installation from design to completion. “When you’re investing at the scale that MacDonald Hotels & Resorts were, you need to make sure you’re working with a supplier that has the experience to see the project through not only technically, but on time, on budget and to specification. As the UK’s leading supplier of LPG, Calor ticks all the boxes.”

The installation project, from early conceptual design to final commission, took nine months.
Calor created a six-strong internal team to technically manage the project. It was led by Kevin who has 20 years Calor LPG experience. Contractors for specialist design, civil works, electrical and pipework installation were appointed and in total 17 people worked on the project from beginning to end.
The project saw the installation of two purpose built 24-tonne capacity LPG storage tanks, two vaporisers for the off-take that feeds the distribution main as well as a road tanker-loading bay. In total, two kilometres of underground pipe work were laid to supply LPG to all facilities. |

Meeting the customer’s needs |

The MacDonald Aviemore Highland Resort is pleased with the work undertaken.
Ruaridh MacDonald, Operations’ Director for MacDonald Aviemore Highland Resort, said: “In a world class resort everything has to run smoothly and efficiently, so utility supplies have an integral part to play in the delivery of high quality service and comfort levels. However, in the heart of an area of such natural beauty as the Scottish Highlands, environmental issues are also of paramount concern. We are delighted with the way Calor has gone about its task to meet our very demanding list of requirements and deliver a highly successful project.”
Gordon Milton, Calor’s Commercial Bulk Specialist for the north of Scotland, manages the day-to-day service provided to the resort. He said: “The installation was the biggest ever for the country and there is still potential for further development today. We continue to support the resort and will be happy to work in partnership with them should they develop even further in the future.”
Aviemore is a flagship development for Calor and demonstrates how the company works closely with not only developers but also heating consultants, engineers and installers to provide a complete solution to meet the needs of businesses in off-main areas.
The extensive work and technical expertise invested in this project has given Calor a blueprint to work from which is already being put into use on other projects.
For The MacDonald Hotel, the result is a totally flexible energy solution that meets all of their needs. |
